Trellis time

Doug and the boys got out the power tools today and made some trellises for the garden.
They measured lengths of 1X4's:

Split them down the center:

Measured off every four inches and mitered the ends:

Hammered in nails on those four inch marks and tied twine
to make an inexpensive but very effective trellis.

Soon, cucumbers, spaghetti squash, cantaloupes, and honeydews
will be climbing UP instead of OUT!

What hard working guys you have there! :) Do the melons eventually pull the plants back down with their weight?

It's amazing, but no, the melons grow very sturdily on the trellis. You're supposed to make like a little sling for the growing melons out of pantyhose, but I've never done that! They grow really big and the vine can support the weight with no problem. When the melon is ripe it just drops to the ground...I've never lost a melon due to a fall either!
